The South African Weather Service has confirmed an Orange Yellow Level 6 warning in parts of the Eastern Cape due to a cut-off low system accompanied by strong winds, heavy downpours, snow and storms.

CAPE TOWN - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has appealed to motorists to drive carefully on the roads following parts of the province that have been hit by snowfall and disruptive rainfall.

The South African Weather Service has confirmed an Orange Yellow Level 6 warning in parts of the province due to a cut-off low system accompanied by strong winds, heavy downpours, snow and storms.

Western Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Free State are also expected to experience the same weather conditions into the weekend.

The N2 Highway near Gqeberha has already been closed due to rough seas.

The Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa, says traffic officials have been deployed in mountain passes affected by snowfall to monitor the situation.

"Some of the affected roads include Penhoek Pass, R58 in Barkly East,  and Mountain Shadow near Elliot. We continue to call on all road users especially our motorists to adhere to the rules of the road and drive cautiously when approaching these areas."
