JOHANNESBURG - Wanted Eskom fugitive Michael Lomas has touched South African soil after being extradited from the United Kingdom (UK).
Lomas was arrested in connection with allegations of fraud and corruption at the power utility amounting to almost R1.5 billion.
He was arrested in London in 2021.
During his first court appearance, he was granted a bail of R1.7 million that year and submitted an additional surety fee of close to R4.3 million rand.
Lomas’ Qatar Airways flight landed on Friday morning.
He was accompanied by the South African Police Service (SAPS)'s Interpol SA unit.
He will be handed over to the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation.
The fraud-accused fugitive attempted to evade prosecution after he was granted R6 million and ordered to appear before a court in the UK.
Now back in the country, he is expected to appear before a regional on Friday.
Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said precautionary measures to ensure his appearance were taken.
“Our responsibility is the SAPS is to facilitate the safe arrival of this extraditee, just like any other arrival into this country. And he will be then handed over to the directorate for priority crimes, investigation, DPCI, or more commonly known as the Hawks.”
