Comic Con Africa thrusts SA's geek culture into the limelight
Eyewitness News talks to Comic Con Africa show director Carla Massmann about the relevance of such an event on South African soil.

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s geeks will get a chance to transform themselves into their alter egos or characters and vibe in a judgement-free environment at Comic Con Africa.
Taking place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre (Nasrec) from 26 to 29 September, the event promises to be a vibrant meeting point of art, creativity and fandom.
Eyewitness News talks to Comic Con Africa show director Carla Massmann about the relevance of such an event on South African soil.
"I think it is that it has become more relevant, rather than still relevant, Comic Con Africa is a platform that highlights how large geek culture actually is in South Africa. Fandoms can be a cornerstone for identity, continuity, and community and that is something everyone relates to, I believe this is one of the reasons the show keeps growing and will continue to, with more people entering the community each year and being exposed to a world that celebrates pop culture and gaming, who find the festival to be a space a self-expressive and judgement free environment, makes it the 'happy place' we work hard to create," said Massmann.
She says many new communities and visitors experience the show for the first time, and from that experience, they turn into fans who return annually.
“Comic Con Africa’s relevance remains at the forefront of South African geek culture as the leading pop culture and gaming festival because we consistently offer fans a new, world-class experience from top global entertainment brands. No two shows are ever the same, and fans can always expect more of what they love from the event.”
Taking it a step further they have ensured that the fun is all-inclusive and accessible to people with various disabilities which is a game changer in South Africa where this group is often forgotten when events are being curated.
“Comic Con Africa is committed to creating an environment that is welcoming to all fans. The venue is equipped with facilities that accommodate people with disabilities, including ramps for wheelchair access to the halls, as well as accessible toilet facilities. We have a quiet room, for those who need to take a break, and we also ensure that anyone with special needs has the opportunity to notify the organiser so we can make arrangements for any specific requirements.”
And to make sure that access isn’t just lip service Massmann says they have partnered with the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) which advocates, lobbies and raises awareness for and with Persons with Disabilities.
“The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), who will be hosting the Marvel Superheroes Training Academy in the KidsCon hall. We are also hosting an after-dark event called 'Drink and Draw', where the proceeds will be donated to the NCPD,” said Massmann.
She advises attendees first to plan their journeys and familiarise themselves with their offering - as there will be tons of activities and content around various topics and genres.
“Dress up! Every year we see more and more visitors, families and communities come out to the show transformed into their favourite superhero, alter ego or character, as an adult it is the largest dress up party ever, and as a family there is nothing more fun for the kids, than having the opportunity to go to an event dressed up with your parent.”
