CAPE TOWN - With no end to incidents of gender-based violence, the Western Cape Social Development Department has expanded an initiative to foster community involvement.

A GBV Ambassador programme and Victim Empowerment Forum has now been established in Heinz Park in Philippi - the fourth of its kind in the province.

Volunteers receive training on GBV awareness and support services, identifying different forms of GBV, basic knowledge of child protection, basic interviewing skills, stress management, how to report GBV matters and how to complete forms and referrals.

Premier Alan Winde on Tuesday formally introduced the 18 volunteers in Heinz Park.

"They started a few years ago in the Swartland community. They then moved to Delft and now to Heinz Park. And this is where the community standing up and saying enough is enough, and we are going to play our part in building safer place specifically for our women and children where gender-based violence is such an issue."
