The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said the sanctions were designed to show the pupils a deeper understanding and seriousness of the incident.
The WCED's spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, said that the punishment had been welcomed by all parties involved, including the parents of the pupils.
"Sanctions are restorative in nature and include participating in various workshops and learning programs, written assignments, as well as community service."
Hammond added that Pinelands High is committed to promoting non-racialism at the school.
