CENTURION - Frustrated Democratic Alliance (DA) members have taken to the streets of Centurion to demonstrate against Eskom’s bid for yet another electricity tariff increase.
The power utility has approached the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), requesting approval for a 36% hike for its direct customers and 40% for its municipal clients.
On Wednesday, the DA embarked on a nationwide day of action, voicing concerns over what it described as electricity extortion.
On the corner of Jean Avenue and Rabie Street in Centurion, a group of DA members were picketing on the side of the road, holding up placards that read, “No one can afford a 40% tariff hike”.
DA councillor in Tshwane David Farquharson said Eskom’s bid for a tariff increase is not only unfair but an insult to South Africans.
“It’s unfair and it’s ridiculous. People are living on the breadline, and paying for past mistakes is going to leave people desperate.”
He said households already struggling to make ends meet are in for an even tougher time.
“It’s a choice between food, electricity, or transport. It’s ridiculous. We can’t afford it. This is nonsense.”
Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink previously said the DA would try and negotiate for a more reasonable tariff hike.
