JOHANNESBURG - The remains of former Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan have been moved from his Pretoria home after the final viewing by close friends and family.

This is ahead of Gordhan’s memorial service, which is scheduled to take place at the Johannesburg City Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

The struggle stalwart died in hospital last week, following a short battle with cancer.

Close friends, family, and fellow struggle icons gathered at Gordhan’s Pretoria home to view his remains for the final time.

With his coffin draped in an African National Congress (ANC) flag, his children observed as friends carefully placed it onto the hearse.

Some mourners were visibly moved to tears as they watched the coffin depart the family home earlier on Tuesday morning.

The former Public Enterprises Minister’s body will be flown to Durban later on Tuesday afternoon.

Ahmed Kathrada Foundation director, Neeshan Bolton, said Gordhan’s family was also en route to Durban for his funeral on Thursday.

"We draped the coffin in the ANC flag, and it's now gone to the funeral parlour. Later this afternoon, it will be flown to Durban and in Durban on Thursday morning. I think it will be placed at one of his family homes. And then it will make its way to the convention centre for the funeral."

Gordhan, who has been accorded a special official funeral, will be cremated on Thursday.
