CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape says social workers are now also being targeted by extortionists demanding protection money.

The party said this came to light during a Standing Committee meeting on Friday.

DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Social Development, Wendy Kaizer-Philander said social workers operating in vulnerable communities are already at risk of attacks and hijackings while on duty.

She said the past year has seen an increase in attacks, with 41 incidents reported, including six robberies and assault, and 35 hijackings.

"The DA once again calls on the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development to take immediate action by classifying these attacks on social workers as an attack on the state," said Kaizer-Philander.
