CAPE TOWN - Some Milnerton Residents have raised concerns over the sewage stench coming from the lagoon beach.

Some people have blamed the rapid expansion of informal settlements in the surrounding areas such as Dunoon.

Residents say the situation has improved over the suspension of load shedding, but the beach remains a no-go area due to health concerns.
Residents in Milnerton say the Lagoon beach is not safe for children and sporting activities.

Despite large warning signs prohibiting people from swimming at the beach, some parents are concerned as children still find their way to the waters.

Eyewitness News visited the area and spoke to the following community members.

"What I can understand is how they let the kids swim here on the lagoon in Saturday afternoon. This place is full." - "If you kind of say the lagoon is not polluted then I guess you going to have thousands of people here creating more pollution I guess." - They throw raw sewage, it just gets dirtier, and dirtier, and dirtier."

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town told Eyewitness News that there are initiatives underway to close off various sewage sources leading to the Lagoon to improve its water quality.
