CAPE TOWN - Eastern Cape police have arrested an 18-year-old suspect after he allegedly strangled a pensioner to death in Mthatha.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the teenager also attempted to kill the 91-year-old’s daughter at Ncokazi Location on Friday.

Provincial police spokesperson Welile Matyolo said after the daughter alerted the community about the incident, the neighbours helped apprehend the suspect.

"The victim immediately summoned the neighbours, who searched for the suspect and found him. The 18-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder, with an additional charge of attempted murder, and is due to appear in the Bityi Regional Court on Monday."
