JOHANNESBURG - Family and friends of the late renowned poet and singer Jessica Mbangeni have described her as a pioneer and a custodian of African heritage.
Mbangeni was laid to rest at Nqamakwe in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.
Among some of the dignitaries who attended her funeral was Eastern Cappe Premier Oscar Mabuyane.
Mbangeni’s son, Sikhaliphile Mbangeni, described the poet as beacon of hope, and an unstoppable force of artistic expression.
"My mother was strong. I also can't believe she's gone. But we have to accept this is God's will, God's work. We cannot be anxious about what we going to do. We have to give it to God's hands."
He added that his mother would have wanted to see him following in her footsteps as a world-renowned poet that touched on social issues.
47-year-old Mbangeni rose to prominence after joining the Soweto Gospel Choir in 2002.
She also pursued acting and singing, having appeared in TV shows such as "Skeem Saam' and "Zabalaza".
She also featured on Vusi Nova's hit song, As'phelelanga
