JOHANNESBURG - Sasko has suspended bread production at a facility where a rodent found its way into a loaf of bread purchased by a KwaZulu-Natal woman.
Towards the end of August, Nombulelo Mkumla shared a video on social media of the incident, only finding the mouse baked and sliced into her meal after eating a few slices.
In her post on Facebook, Mkumla said she took the bread back to the store where it was purchased, received a full refund, and was told to lay a complaint with the supplier.
After making contact with the supplier, she said she received a phone call from a representative assuring her consuming the bread with the rodent would not affect her health.
She said the experience was "traumatic and disgusting", and that she doubted she would consume Sasko products again.
How the mouse met its demise inside a loaf of bread is still a mystery, however.
Sasko confirmed to Eyewitness News that after being informed of Mkumla's experience, an investigation was immediately launched, and third-party service providers engaged.
But despite this being "an extreme and isolated, yet very unfortunate incident", Sasko said it would suspend the production of bread at the facility in question until investigations concluded.
"We were shocked and devastated when a KZN consumer, informed us that she found a rodent in her loaf of Sasko bread. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience or discomfort that this incident caused Ms Nombulelo Mkumla as well as any of our other loyal consumers," Sasko said in a statement.
