CAPE TOWN - Political parties across the board have paid respect to late former minister, Pravin Gordhan, saying he led in an "exemplary manner" wherever he served.

Parties have expressed sadness at Gordhan’s passing, saying the long-serving minister and member of Parliament was at the forefront of the country’s transition to democracy.

The parties joined several organisations and state entities in paying respect to Gordhan who died at the age of 75 on Friday morning.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament, through Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli, said that Gordhan dedicated his life to the struggle for the liberation of the people of South Africa.

Gordhan’s party said he was a "consummate" public servant who steered the South African Revenue Service as its commissioner into a "world-class revenue collection service" from 1999 to 2009.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) also joined in paying respect to Gordhan with parliamentary whip, Steve Swart, saying: "Gordhan led in an exemplary manner in many roles he held in public office."

Build One South Africa (BOSA) acting spokesperson, Roger Solomons, said most notably, Gordhan was the commissioner of South African Revenue Service (SARS) "in which the economy saw strong growth and demonstrated fiscal responsibility".

Good Party leader, Patricia de Lille, meanwhile, said the late former public enterprises minister spent most of his life "fighting against injustice, toward a free and better South Africa for all".
