JOHANNESBURG - East London’s King Phalo Airport is back up and running as of Friday morning.
Operations were grounded on Thursday as a result of adverse weather and problems with the navigation systems.
No flights were able to land at or take off from the airport, leaving travellers stranded.
Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said, “These are welcome developments for us as the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, [as] we understand the importance of air transport as an enabler for economic development, especially for our province that is in dire need of economic stimulation.
“We further welcome the intervention by the national minister, Minister [Barbara] Creecy, on giving clear deadlines to our partners in attending to their navigation system challenges without cutting any corners of course so we can avoid having fair-weather airports, as is the case at the moment.”
