JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng department of sports, arts, culture and recreation has returned over R850 million in unspent funds to Treasury over the past six years.

This is according to a response submitted to the provincial legislature by MEC Matome Chiloane.

The largest amount surrendered to treasury was R295 million during the 2020 / 2021 financial year, when the sector was feeling the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

DA Gauteng Spokesperson on Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Leanne de Jager said that this money could have been used to rehabilitate the province's crumbling heritage monuments.

"The DA plans to address this crisis by implementing strict financial controls, ensuring consequence management for under-utilised budgets, holding accounting officers accountable, pressurising the MEC allocated budgets responsibly, leveraging expertise to achieve budget targets, focusing on restoring heritage sites to create economic opportunities.”
