JOHANNESBURG - The Office of the Auditor General (AG) said the rate of timely submissions of financial statements by municipalities has improved over the past years.
In the 2021 financial year, 80% of municipalities submitted their financial statements on time, while in the last financial year, that figure increased to about 97%.

Speaking at the National Press Club earlier on Thursday in Pretoria, AG Tsakani Maluleke said the early submission of financial reports avoided municipalities incurring irregular and unauthorised expenditure.
“So, I believe a combination of us using our enforcement powers but also using our influence has helped to get that right. What we need to guard against is a reversal of those gains, especially when we have another transition in the political leadership of municipalities following the forthcoming elections in 2026.”
