JOHANNESBURG - After another delay in former African National Congress (ANC) national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa’s corruption case, his legal team is considering applying for a separation of trial from his co-accused.
Kodwa is accused alongside former EOH boss, Jehan Mackay.
It's alleged that between 2014 and 2016, Mackay paid Kodwa bribes totalling R1.7 million in exchange for the politician to use his influence within the governing party to direct state tenders to his tech company.
The pair made a brief appearance at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.
The State and Kodwa's legal team said they were ready to move to trial.
However, the matter cannot move on to trial because Kodwa’s co-accused in the matter, Mackay, has made applications to have the charges against him dropped.
Mackay's first application was rejected by the regional head of the specialised commercial crimes court unit and an administrative error resulted in his second application to the director of public prosecutions having to be resubmitted.
Kodwa's lawyer, Zola Majavu, said that they were considering all their options now.
"Even if we respect that they have the right to pursue recourse, they want to but it cannot be that my client is kept in abeyance if these delays continue. I have given advance warning I will consider bringing an application for a separation of trials."
The matter returns to court on 3 October.
