CAPE TOWN - The Good Party said it was looking forward to the parliamentary debate on teacher cuts in the Western Cape
The Speaker of the provincial legislature has agreed to the party's urgent request to schedule a debate on the provincial government's decision to cut more than 2,400 teacher posts.
The provincial education department said that the cuts were due to National Treasury slashing its budget by R3.8 billion over the next three financial years.
The Good Party said that the debate, scheduled for Thursday, was important to hold the executive accountable for the decisions they make.
The Good Party's Brett Herron: "We cannot sit by and allow decisions to go unchallenged that will undoubtedly add to the already severe inequality in the Western Cape. There are solutions to the province’s engineered funding crisis, which simply involve making better budgetary choices. We therefore welcome the decision on the debate as the people of the Western Cape deserve to be informed of the facts."
