JOHANNESBURG - The South African music industry has lauded late kwaito superstar Sandile ‘Mapaputsi’ Ngwenya as an industry leader who leaves an indelible legacy.
Last week Thursday, Mapaputsi passed on in a KwaZulu-Natal hospital after battling an illness.
The details around his passing have not yet been made public, however, his mortal remain were transported from KZN to Gauteng.
The Manga Manga Business singer is hailed as a trailblazer within the kwaito genre and to a degree a contributor to the growing genre Amapiano.
Mapaputsi’s colleague and friend, Malungelo Khamango, has called for greater recognition of kwaito stars.
"He’s one of the first artists to play there (on radio) and when you play on radio you get booked and when you get booked, you make money, so we had a lot of hope for him. I don’t want to say much but the government needs to recognise us, we started this. We [kwaito stars] started amapiano, ask the artists, they were inspired by us [kwaito stars]," said Khamango.
