JOHANNESBURG - Two suspects have been shot and killed in a shootout with police in Brackendowns, south of Johannesburg.
The incident took place on Friday afternoon, following a multi-disciplinary police operation.
It's understood that as police identified the vehicle the suspects were travelling in, the pair shot at police.
Officials returned fire, fatally wounding the two suspects.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, said that ammunition was also recovered in the process.
"The identified suspect vehicle made its way towards the R59 and upon the realisation that the multi-disciplinary team was tactically approaching, the suspects fired at police. A shootout ensued when police returned fire, fatally wounding the two suspects in the vehicle, which was affixed with false registration plates.
"The suspects' vehicle continued to flee but they drove into a ditch. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms, a rifle and a handgun, ammunition for both firearms, cellphones, and gloves. An investigation is underway to ascertain if the suspects were involved in other aggravating robberies in and around Johannesburg."
