Pippa Hudson interviews consumer journalist Wendy Knowler.

Listen below.

A few weeks ago, after addressing consumer concerns about the paint peeling on their Hyundai i20 models, Knowler and Hudson received a thoughtful email from a listener who followed Knowlers' advice on how to handle the issue:

"I just wanted to let you and Wendy Knowler know that due to listening to your programme a few weeks ago about the Hyundai i20 model with the peeling paint issue, I was encouraged to reapply to have my 2012 vehicle assessed, despite having being turned down last year. You can imagine how disappointed I was at the time.

Strengthened by Wendy’s advice - I emailed Hyundai Malmesbury and customer service and was invited to bring my car in for quotes a week or so ago.  I received the good news yesterday that they were prepared to restore my vehicle as a goodwill gesture. I was to say the least overjoyed to hear this.

Malmesbury Hyundai made me feel most welcome. So thank you for highlighting this issue. It pays to speak up. And not give up."

If you notice that the paint on your Hyundai i20 is chipping or peeling, Knowler advises you to visit any Hyundai dealership.

They will arrange for an inspection of the paintwork, and Hyundai SA will cover the cost of any necessary respraying.

Already paid for paint restoration? Knowler says you may still get a refund.

You must present invoices and evidence of the repaired paint defect to qualify.

Hyundai Automotive South Africa will review these cases individually and address the paint defects accordingly.

To initiate a refund or seek assistance, customers should contact Hyundai Automotive SA’s Customer Service Department at icare@hyundai.co.za.

"You can approach any dealership and they will arrange an inspection."
