CAPE TOWN - Cabinet has called for a zero-tolerance approach against growing extortion, saying it did not only harm indivuduals, it also undermined the economy.

Acting Minister in the Presidency Maropene Ramokgopa briefed the media on Thursday on the outcomes of Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.

Ramokgopa said that South Africa was learning from international best practices to develop strategies "to deal decisively" with incidents of extortion.

Growing extortion has now come under the spotlight not just in Parliament, but is also a topic of discussion in Cabinet.

Minister Ramokgopa said that the matter now went beyond just affecting individuals.

"Extortion does not just harm individuals, it undermines our entire economy. By fighting this crime, we are protecting jobs, encouraging investment and promoting economic growth."

Ramokgopa said that the police were now being equipped with the latest techniques to fight the scourge.

"Including advanced intelligence gathering and specialised task forces, to staying ahead of criminal tactics."

Ramokgopa said that extortion often thrived where there was a lack of economic opportunity and government was addressing the root causes by investing in education, job creation, and community development.
