JOHANNESBURG - Suspended Pretoria chief magistrate, Desmond Nair, has failed in his bid to have the corruption charges against him dropped.
It's alleged that in 2016, Nair received security upgrades at his Gauteng home worth R200,000.
The upgrades, which included an electric fence, perimeter beams, alarm and CCTV systems, were carried out by controversial company, African Global Operations, formerly known as BOSASA.
Nair appeared at the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday, where he was told that the national director of public prosecutions (NDPP) had rejected his application to have the charges dropped.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)'s Investigating Directorate, Henry Mamothame: "The corruption case against suspended Pretoria chief magistrate, Desmond Nair, was postponed by the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court to 26 September 2024 for his attorney to study the reply by the NDPP to which he made representations to have his charges withdrawn. The NDPP has not acceded to Nair’s bid and therefore decided that prosecution must proceed."
