CAPE TOWN - Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said that plans were underway for the department to migrate from working manually to digitally.

Since taking over the portfolio in July, Schreiber has been pushing for the digitisation of the Department of Home Affairs' working system to safeguard national security.

Speaking at the Cape Town Press Club on Tuesday, Schreiber said that his vision was to see the department performing at a world-class level.

He, however, highlighted that this would not happen "overnight".

Schreiber said that the lack of a modern digital system at Home Affairs was the root cause of the national security threat faced by the sector.

The minister said that he hoped the switch from manual to digital would take shape soon.

"I've said what I would like is an engine that works - I want to turn the key at some point not too long from now and that engine must start. I think if we can get to that point, it will be a major milestone for us. What I mean by that is a prototype that demonstrates how we can automate these manual processes."

The minister said that while he understood the urgency to turn Home Affairs around, this would not happen overnight.
