Outbreak response teams intensifying efforts to educate public about food safety

JOHANNESBURG - Outbreak response teams are intensifying efforts to educate the public about food safety. 

Officials are on awareness campaigns across Gauteng following a rise in food poisoning cases. 

This week, officials are expected to conduct inspections in Tshwane and Ekurhuleni. 

Since February, the Department of Health has recorded 207 food poisoning cases affecting children. 

Gauteng Health spokesperson Motaletale Modiba said these cases were prevalent in townships, hostels, and informal settlements. 

"This is part of continuing efforts to reduce the risk of food poisoning and fatalities by promoting safe food-handling behaviour, promoting the keeping of clean environments, and warning the public about the long-term impact of illegal dumping."
