CAPE TOWN - A former cop charged with corruption in the trial against alleged underworld kingpin Nafiz Modack took the stand in court on Monday during a "trial within a trial".

Former Anti-Gang Unit member Ashley Tabisher tried to convince the court he made a warning statement after being promised bail.

Tabisher is on trial along with Modack and 13 others who face a slew of charges related to various crimes, including murder, extortion, money laundering, and fraud.

Tabisher explained to the court how he was arrested at his home in May 2021 before being taken to Bellville police station.

After choosing to remain silent, Tabisher said Hawks officer Andile Mankayi insisted his bail application would carry more weight in court with a statement.

Tabisher admitted he made the statement in the presence of his attorney, who found no fault in the process.

The State prosecutor put it to Tabisher that no promise of bail was made, and that Tabisher had fabricated the story.

Judge Robert Henney ended proceedings by ruling Tabisher's warning statement was admissible for the State to use as evidence in court on Tuesday.
