Community Safety committee in Gauteng concerned about bleak crime report
According to the report, between 2023/24, more than one million housebreaking incidents occurred countrywide.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng provincial legislature’s portfolio committee on community safety said that a recent crime report by Statistics SA painted a bleak picture.
According to the report, between 2023/24, more than one million housebreaking incidents occurred countrywide.
The committee said the high levels of crime in Gauteng threatened the country’s sense of security.
Stats SA’s report highlighted the alarming trend of house robberies, theft and other crimes in the country.
According to the report, an estimated 1.4 million incidents of personal property theft occurred in the finance same period, with more than 400,000 reports of robberies.
The Gauteng provincial legislature’s portfolio committee is now calling on residents, law enforcement agencies and community leaders to work together to develop strategies to combat crime.
The committee believes this will enable more focused and coordinated efforts to address crime.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is expected to appear before the committee in September to brief it on Gauteng crime stats.
