Lester Kiewit discusses ‘Brasse Vannie Kaap’ with legendary DJ Grandmaster Ready D.

Silwerskerm Film Festival - the only Afrikaans film festival in the world - is back.

The festival kicked off on 29 August and continues until Saturday, 31 August 2024.

The festival offers 'an exciting lineup' filled with film screenings and thought-provoking discussions with like-minded film lovers.

One documentary, ‘Brasse Vannie Kaap' (BVK), directed by Lauren Scholtz, captures the rise of the iconic 90s hip-hop group and their lasting impact while rising to fame in early post-apartheid South Africa.

The doccie also shows reflections from group members like the legendary Deon Daniels AKA DJ Grandmaster Ready D, and local stars like Early B and Jack Parow. The film explores BVK’s impact and includes a behind-the-scenes look at a tribute show for late frontman Mr Fat, culminating in a nostalgic reunion performance celebrating BVK’s legacy.

The film premieres today at 5 pm on 'Theatre on the Bay' and will stream on Showmax from Monday, 7 October.

Ticket prices start from R50. Book them here, or learn more about what's at the festival here.

Focusing on music and activism strategically is how BVK stayed alive throughout decades, despite those who have passed on, says Ready D.

About the film, he adds that it's an honour to be part of it all.

"With this story being told, it's not just about me, there are so many people that have been part of the journey. So it's just to amplify and highlight a story so many people had to go through during very interesting times in South Africa."
- DJ Grandmaster Ready D
"For me to have a prominent voice in all of that - I am completely emotional, overwhelmed and grateful that our stories are being told on mainstream platforms, because it has been a very, very long time to get people to hear and understand hip-hop as a culture and genre."
- DJ Grandmaster Ready D
