JOHANNESBURG - Former South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA) leader, Colleen Makhubele, has joined the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
In a statement released on Thursday morning, Makhubele said that she had resigned from South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA), an organisation she played a huge part in establishing.
SARA had a disappointing showing in the recent general elections, failing to get even one seat nationally and in the two provinces they contested.
The former Johannesburg council Speaker said that Jacob Zuma's MK Party has become a beacon of hope for all African leaders and organisations.
Makhubele says she did not join the MK Party for positions citing she has skills to offer the organisation.
She’s the latest high-profile politician to leave their party and join the MK Party, following in the footsteps of former Economic Freedom Fighters Deputy President Floyd Shivambu.
Before joining politics, Makhubele worked in both the private and public sector, focusing largely on information and communication technologies.
Her most notable post came as chairperson of the South African Post Office (SAPO) in 2020.
However, she only held the position for a couple of months before being fired by the SAPO board for bringing the state-owned entity into disrepute.
Makhubele says part of the reason she joined the MK Party is because it is committed to sending the brightest people to represent it in the country’s legislative houses.
“Ultimately it will be up to MK to decide where they place me or any other leader that goes there so I am not moved by what those reactions are, whether they are viewed as opportunistic or not.”
The MK Party has released a statement welcoming Makhubele to the party, saying she will be as asset.
