A year ago, Ali Truwit lost her leg in a shark attack. Now, she's competing in the Paralympics.
On 24 May 2023, while snorkeling off Turks and Caicos, a shark struck Truwit's lower left leg.
Despite severe injuries and the predator circling, Truwit swam 75 yards to safety and was swiftly transported to the U.S. for surgery, including the amputation of her leg below the knee.
"Swimming was the first thing that saved my life, and the second was my teammate, Sophie," said Truwit on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
A "lifelong athlete," Truwit faced intense pain and uncertainty about her future.
She shared that she wondered if she would ever be an athlete again.
Reflecting on her journey during an interview with the Today Show, she remarked, "Being in this space has exposed me so much and given me so much of my confidence back."
"I’m unique in that I was attacked by a shark, but I’m not unique in that we all go through hardship and trauma and tough times in life, and we all have the capacity to rise back up."
"This is so inspirational."
