JOHANNESBURG - South Africans continue to show little faith in the police.
This was revealed in Statistics South Africa (Stats SA)’s 2023/24 victims of crime report released on Tuesday.
It found that less than half of a sample size of 30,000 households reported housebreakings to the South African Police Service.
Stats SA’s victims crime report revealed an estimated 1,5 million incidences of housebreaking occurred - affecting 1,1 million households in South Africa over the 2023/24 period.
Using a sample size of 30,000 households, the report revealed that less than half of the victims of housebreaking reported the crimes to police.
"About 44,1% of households that experienced housebreaking reported some or all incidences to the police," explained Stats SA’s Boitumelo Mooketsi.
And when it comes to house robberies, only 58% of the victims reported the crimes.
"Home robbery ranks as the second most common crime affecting South African households with 209, 000 households experiencing this crime in 2023/24."
A majority of the sample size feel the police are inefficient.
