Mariah Carey's (55) mother and sister both died this past weekend, the singer confirmed in a statement on Monday.
The 55-year-old singer did not specify how her mother and sister died or on what day.
“My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey's statement said.
“Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the statement continued.
The Grammy-winning singer said she felt 'blessed' to have spent time with her mother in the week before her death and asked for privacy.
Carey's mother, Patricia Carey (87), was an opera singer who recorded with her daughter before her death.
In previous interviews, Carey revealed that her mother was the first to inspire her to sing.
In Carey's 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer detailed her complicated relationship with her mother, saying it had caused her 'so much pain and confusion'.
Carey said that competition had come between them.
"Professional jealousy comes with the territory of success, but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it’s particularly painful," she added.
In the memoir, Carey also reported her estrangement from her older sister Alison (63).
The singer wrote that it was 'emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact' with Alison and her brother Morgan.
Alison sued Carey for $1.2 million following the release of the memoir for 'immense emotional distress', calling it 'vindictive'.
No other details about the pair's death have been released.
