JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) Joburg chairperson, Dada Morero, said that the party had resolved to train JMPD officers to be proficient in foreign languages as a measure to improve crime-fighting efforts.
Morero announced this during a media briefing at the party's lekgotla on Monday, where he retracted his proposal to employ immigrants as police officers.
Morero, who was recently appointed Joburg mayor, said that part of the huge problem he'd noticed with tackling crime was the language barrier.
"The lekgotla, however, accepted the concern that language barriers frustrate police work as valid and legitimate. I shared these views in order to inspire debate in the lekgotla, which is a platform for ANC leaders to consider with open-mindedness all options available to resolve challenges facing our people."
