CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape community policing forum said that it could not be business as usual while people were still being forced to pay protection fees.
The forum is calling on the SAPS to deploy special police units in hotspot areas countrywide to protect people’s livelihoods.
The call comes as Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, battles with the closure of businesses and schools due to extortion racket fee demands.
Corruption Watch said that extortion was a growing threat that must urgently be stopped before it established itself as a norm.
The Western Cape community policing forum chairperson, Fransina Lukas: "We hope that the South African Police Services and all other law enforcement agencies will do what is necessary to maintain law and order, so that our communities are safe and that they feel safe."
