CAPE TOWN  - Alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack says he hired co-accused Zane Kilian to "investigate" whether slain top cop Charl Kinnear was colluding with his rival, Jerome "Donkie" Booysen.

Modack and 14 co-accused, face 122 charges related to various crimes centered around the murder of Kinnear.

On Monday, Modack's attorney, Bashier Sibda continued with his cross-examination of the State's main witness, Hawk's officer Edward du Plessis.

Under the spotlight is Modack's link to co-accused Kilian, who faces charges related to tracking Kinnear up to a day before his murder in September 2020.

Sibda told the court Modack hired Kilian to "investigate" whether Kinnear was colluding with Booysen.

Modack, who was being investigated by Kinnear, said he wanted to prove the pair had a corrupt relationship.

Sibda pointed out evidence, which showed Kinnear and Booysen were in Sandton at the same time, 10 days before Kinnear's murder, and on a previous occasion in the Belhar area.

However, Hawks Edward du Plessis told the court that based on the evidence, it was highly unlikely that Booysen and Kinnear met with each other on those occasions.

The trial continues.
