Eskom CEO Dan Marokane says if the power utility is able to keep unplanned outages down to around 13,000MW, there won't be any load shedding in summer.
South Africans have experienced more than 150 days of being load shedding free.
The warmer months of the year is the traditional maintenance period for Eskom, where power stations are taken offline for work to take place.
Stage 2 power cuts will likely be implemented should breakdowns consistently exceed the 14,000MW.
Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, Eskom Group CEO Dan Marokane says while they cannot guarantee no load shedding, they are working towards ensuring energy availability during summer.
"We are really focusing on managing the unplanned capacity losses. We've done the same approach throughput the winter. We indicated that if we stayed below the 14,000MW, we should see a load shedding-free winter, and we've been able to do so..."
- Dan Marokane, CEO - Eskom
"...having seen the improvements over the last four months, that if we stay below 13,000 we should be able to meet the demand from the generating capacity."
- Dan Marokane, CEO - Eskom
"A sustained performance, along the lines that we're observing at the moment, together with a return to service of some key three units... will place us in a state where we can honestly look back and take that view [of calling an end to load shedding]."
