Hundreds march to Parliament in memory of Uyinene Mrwetyana

CAPE TOWN - In honour of the life of the late University of Cape Town (UCT) student Uyinene Mrwetyana, more than 200 people marched to Parliament on Saturday.

It has been five years since the 19-year-old was killed in Claremont.

Mrwetyana was brutally murdered by Post Office employee, Luyanda Botha while picking up her parcel from the Clareinch Post Office.

Dozens honoured the memory of Mrwetyana during a walk from Hanover Park Street to Parliament.

Students from UCT, young people representing the primary school where her mother teaches, and different organisations including the Uyinene Foundation and other gender-based violence organisations joined Saturday's march, saying enough was enough.

UCT professor, Elelwani Ramugondo said the government had not followed up on its promises to protect women.
 
"We are getting worse. I say this because not so long ago, we heard of a 101 lady, elderly person, who was raped by a young man, and it tells us that we are not okay."

Botha has since been sentenced to life imprisonment for her murder and is embroiled in another case of attempted rape.
