JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has described the party’s relationship with the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane as toxic and abusive, despite the fact they run the metro together.

Mashaba has confirmed to EWN that discussions with the African National Congress (ANC) had begun to possibly join hands to remove the DA from power in the capital city.

After years of speaking ill of the former liberation party, ActionSA recently overturned its commitment to never share a bed with the ANC in any sphere of government.

ActionSA occupies several seats in the City of Tshwane’s mayoral committee and also holds the metro's deputy mayor position.

But this is seemingly not enough to convince the party to endure its turbulent relationship with the DA.

Mashaba said that working with the DA in Tshwane had been difficult, claiming the DA expected his party to dance to its tune.

"For us as ActionSA, we cannot really be in an abusive relationship forever, so we have the fullest right to exercise our right when you try and abuse us and think we’ll stay in an abusive relationship – not with us."

While the DA believes it's leading a stable government in Tshwane, Mashaba said his party was plotting a power takeover with the ANC.

The organisation has previously announced intentions to occupy the Speaker's position in council.
