Metrorail says it is on track to restore the entire network of its Central Line service.

Following extensive vandalism and theft of cables and signalling equipment, the Central Line service in Cape Town was suspended in October 2019.

In 2020, during the Covid lockdown, security on the line was cancelled by the
Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).

The Central Line services a considerable commuter population on the Cape Flats, but currently does not provide trains to Nyanga, Khayelitsha or Mitchells Plain.

Maseko says they're working on that.

"What we've been able to do is restore the Central Line...The line from Cape Town to Bellville via Sarepta, that line is back in service...the signalling is live on that line again, we are taking the signalling towards Nyanga. That will service both the Chris Hani and the Kapteinsklip lines."
Raymond Maseko, Western Cape regional manager - Metrorail
"On the Khayelitisha line, there's only four stations left for us to reach the terminal station, that is Nonqubela Station, Kuyasa and Chris Hani and on the Kapteinsklip line there's only three stations left, Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain and Kapteinsklip."
Raymond Maseko, Western Cape regional manager - Metrorail
"With the restoration of the signalling, we are able to run a train every ten minutes...from Cape Town all the way to Bonteheuwel..."
