JOHANNESBURG - The National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi, has assured Chief Justice Raymond Zondo that his work chairing the State Capture Commission of Inquiry would not be in vain.
Batohi was one of the speakers at a special ceremonial sitting of the Constitutional Court held in Zondo’s honour on Wednesday.
This comes ahead his retirement at the end of August.
Batohi in her address spoke at length about the commission: "As a country we came to understand that State capture was an orchestrated attack against our hard fought democracy and economy, where a coterie of political and business elites, undermined the state and its institutions for personal, political and financial gain."
Batohi thanked Zondo for his work as commission chair, and despite criticism around the slow pace of prosecutions, was adamant that they were committed to bringing those implicated to book.
"You may retire assured, CJ, that we will not rest until the job is done. There will be justice and accountability. It is a reality that, unlike in the past, impunity is no longer a given; those with dirty hands should not be sleeping easy.
