JOHANNESBURG - A political analyst has weighed in on the departure of Floyd Shivambu from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), describing it as the worst crisis to hit the party's leadership.

Prince Mashele said the move had sent a message to EFF supporters that there was something wrong on the leadership benches.

Mashele shared these views following EFF leader Julius Malema's robust speech on the matter on Monday night.

Addressing supporters in Soweto, Malema weighed in on Shivambu's exit from the EFF, describing it as a betrayal of the organisation.

Malema said the time for mourning Shivambu's decision was over, and the party must move forward.

Mashele said it was evident Malema had been left seriously hurt by this development.

"Floyd Shivambu was not just a member, he was a founder. But more than that, these two were friends and treated each other as brothers.

"So, what this did has actually sent a message to the general membership of the EFF that something isn’t right in the upper echelons of the leadership, and he’s aware of that."
