JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA in Johannesburg has announced its intentions to field its caucus leader, Nobuhle Mthembu, for the Speaker position in the municipal council.
The seat was left vacant last week when the African Independent Congress (AIC)’s Margaret Arnolds, who has been appointed as Finance MMC, resigned from the position.
ActionSA’s newly formed relationship with the African National Congress (ANC) in the metro is likely to see most political parties in the council throwing their weight behind Mthembu’s election.
The party’s provincial chairperson, Funzi Ngobeni, said Mthembu was more than capable of leading the city’s legislative arm.
"She’s an experienced, dedicated, ardent advocate for accountability and transparency. Councillor Mthembu has been at the forefront of championing the interests of Johannesburg residents during her term in council, qualities that we believe make her an ideal candidate for the role of Speaker."
