Extortion groups devastate Eastern Cape businesses

Extortionists are targeting construction sites across the country, with the Eastern Cape currently in the spotlight.
These groups force these sights to pay ‘protection money’ or the safety of the staff and project will be threatened.
Vuyisile Ntlabati, Eastern Cape Chamber of Business president, says the problem is particularly bad in Mthatha where everything is being targeted.
He says that a number of small businesses have had to close because they could not afford protection money.
“It is escalating like anything… it is a problem that has gotten out of hand.”
