Drakenstein mayor asks NERSA to reject Eskom's proposed 36% electricity price hike

CAPE TOWN - Drakenstein Municipality Mayor Stephen Korabie has written to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), asking it to reject Eskom's proposed 36% electricity price hike.
Korabie said that while the municipality understood the need to ensure the financial stability of Eskom, it could not accept the burden placed on residents, many of whom were already struggling to make ends meet.

He also pointed out that the proposed increase would have a devastating impact on low-income households and local businesses.
Drakenstein Municipality Deputy Mayor Gert Combrink said: "We urge NERSA to consider alternative solutions that balance Eskom's needs with the socio-economic realities of our community. We request a fair and equitable pricing structure that considers the economic constraints of our residents."
