JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA in Gauteng says the speaker position in the Johannesburg council must be occupied by a candidate with an unwavering commitment to accountability and transparency.
The party believes its caucus leader Nobuhle Mthembu is the most qualified and suitable councillor to fill the vacant seat.
Her endorsement for the position follows the resignation of the African Independent Congress (AIC)’s Margaret Arnolds, who leads Joburg’s finance portfolio.
The African National Congress (ANC) and ActionSA have agreed to work together on an issue-by-issue basis in Joburg, on condition Herman Mashaba’s party is given the speaker position.
Last week, ActionSA threw its weight behind the ANC’s Dada Morero to Joburg’s mayoral office.
The ANC is expected to return the favour on Wednesday, by supporting the election of Mthembu to the council speaker post.
ActionSA Gauteng chairperson Funzi Ngobeni said Mthembu is competent enough to occupy the much-contested position.
“Councillor Mthembu’s commitment and track record in protecting the best interest of the Joburg residents is unimpeachable.”
Council is expected to sit on Wednesday for the election of a speaker.
