CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has lauded the province for maintaining the lowest youth unemployment rate in the country in the second quarter of this year.
This follows the recent release of Stats SA's Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the second quarter, which showed that youth unemployment was sitting at 60.8% compared to the previous quarter’s 59.7%.
Meanwhile, the provincial unemployment rate is just over 22%.
Winde has called for unified action between the government and the private sector to address youth unemployment.
Speaking at an employer breakfast event in Cape Town on Sunday, Winde said that his government was committed to tackling the pressures of youth unemployment.
"If we have a look at the statistics, and we just had the labour force statistics which showed the high unemployment rate in South Africa, I'm very pleased to see that we are still by far the lowest in the Western Cape. But we have to invest in young people because that's where the highest unemployment rate sits. But there are massive advantages to bringing young people into your businesses."
