ANC Gauteng sets sights on City of Tshwane

JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has now set its sights on the City of Tshwane as it prepares to reclaim the mayoral chains in the municipality.

The capital city is the only metro in the province that is not under the control of the ANC, after returning to the helm of Joburg and Ekurhuleni.

The party expressed interest in regaining its power in Tshwane on Monday afternoon.

The ANC in Gauteng is negotiating with other political parties, in a bid to establish a solid coalition that will remove the Democratic Alliance (DA) from power in the capital city.

The party has been at the helm of the metro for over a year, through the support of ActionSA, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

But with Herman Mashaba’s organisation now working with the ANC in Joburg, there are suggestions that the relationship might boil over to Tshwane.

ANC provincial chairperson Panyaza Lesufi said that several political organisations have shown interest in joining hands to dethrone the DA.

"But there has been a huge surge from various political parties in Tshwane who want the ANC to come back to rescue Tshwane, it’s an opportunity that we are willing to work around."

Lesufi said that in the next few weeks the ANC should regain power in Tshwane.
