Govt not blind to the plight of artists, says McKenzie

JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie said government was not blind to the plight of artists amid renewed concerns over their livelihoods.
McKenzie was speaking at the funeral service of veteran actress, Connie Chiume, on the East Rand on Thursday
The 72-year-old died in hospital following a medical procedure.

McKenzie addressed a range of challenges faced by the entertainment industry, including a lack of funding from government.
“This government is your government. There’s no shame in asking for help from this government. This government must help you. It will help you.”
However, he said there must be transparency about aid given to artists.
“But you must not tell us you got R100,000, you must not put us on social media. Why did you ask me for money?”
