Lester Kiewit interviews Tessa Dooms, Director of the Rivonia Circle.

Listen below.

Floyd Shivambu has resigned as deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and chosen not to renew his membership.

He will instead join the newly established MK Party, led by Jacob Zuma.

During a media briefing on Thursday, Julius Malema compared the news of Shivambu's departure to the grief of losing his mother, highlighting the emotional impact on him.

This development has sparked speculation about the potential decline of the EFF.

Malema acknowledged that it will be a challenging period for EFF members who might consider joining Shivambu in the MKP.

"The EFF is definitely in a crisis that it hasn't seen before."
- Tessa Dooms, Director – Rivonia Circle

Dooms emphasises that the press conference's focus was not the EFF, but rather the MK Party, which she characterises as the most underexamined political entity in the country.

She adds that this development represents a strategic gain for the MK Party.

"Jacob Zuma has this history in the MK Party of going and collecting leaders of society in different spaces to try and consolidate different forms of power and different constituencies and I think this is one of those moves."
- Tessa Dooms, Director – Rivonia Circle
