JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) has reclaimed the mayoral chains in Joburg as its regional chairperson, Dada Morero has been elected as mayor.
189 councillors voted for Morero's ascension to power, while Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus leader Belinda Kayser Echeozonjoku received 60 votes.
His election to the position follows the resignation of Al-Jama-Ah's Kabelo Gwamanda, who was parachuted to the position by the ANC and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in May last year.
In 2022, Morero served as Joburg mayor for 25 days, after the Johannesburg High Court ruled that his election to the office was unlawful.
During his short stint as mayor, Morero made headlines for announcing plans to install Jojo tanks in every household in the city amid water supply challenges.
Morero, whose dreams of becoming mayor have finally become a reality, was backed by the ANC, EFF, ACTIONSA and minority parties in council.
Meanwhile, the ANC is in high spirits in council as it has returned to the mayoral office of the country's biggest municipality.
